Early 1940s Paris, Younes’ flat has been raided and drugs have been found in his apartment. Seized by police he is offered bail on condition that he spies on the mosque. Whilst watching for communists, he finds a greater resistance within the mosque’s walls. Between the Nazi inspectors searching for clandestine Jews and communists and Algerian revolutionaries, Younes learns where his true alliance lies after he is almost mistaken for a member of the Jewish faith. Beautifully shot, this film allows the viewer to engage with each character, all with rich personalities, despite how briefly they appear on screen. The film highlights the important role the mosque of Paris played during the resistance, primarily as a safe house for all those who needed it. Recommended to those interested in World War France and Arab sentiment at the time.
